Globalbit is an Israeli custom software development company. This page is a case study about Moovit (Transportation). Globalbit built the first versions of Moovit, led its mobile team for 2+ years, invented transit UX patterns now used globally, and helped scale the app from zero to 200M+ users before Intel acquired Moovit for $900M. Key facts: 1.7 billion users worldwide, MVP delivered in 2 months, $900M Intel acquisition, Google Play App of the Year, Apple Editor's Choice.

Building the Standard for Smart Mobility Category

We built Moovit’s first versions in-house, established and led its mobile team for over two years, and created UX patterns that became the global standard for transit apps. Together, we scaled the architecture from zero to 200,000,000+ users and helped shape a mobile organization ready for global growth and acquisition.

[ THE CHALLENGE ]

A Startup Racing to Own a Category

Moovit had a bold idea: make public transportation accessible to everyone through a single mobile app. But competitors were emerging, transit data was fragmented, and no one had built a consumer-grade transit experience on mobile. They needed a development team that could ship fast, solve hard technical problems, and build something millions of people would trust with their daily commute.

  • -First-Mover Window ClosingCompetitors were entering the transit space. Without a live product in the market, Moovit's entire opportunity was at risk. Speed wasn't a preference, it was survival. Two months to ship or lose the category.
  • -No Proven PlaybookThere was no existing transit app to benchmark against. Every UX decision, from route search to arrival alerts, was a bet. No reference designs, no competitor patterns to copy. The entire interaction model had to be invented.
  • -Technology That Didn't Exist YetProcessing real-time data from millions of users and hundreds of transit operators simultaneously had never been done in a consumer app. The infrastructure had to be built from scratch to deliver sub-second updates.
  • -Geospatial ComplexityDelivering accurate real-time transit data requires massive spatial data processing on mobile devices. We needed to create a full GIS structure from scratch that wouldn't drain a commuter's battery in hours.

"Moovit chose Globalbit as its development partner for our expertise and track record building mobile applications used by millions of people."

Move Fast. Ship. Learn. Refactor.

Globalbit assembled a dedicated team of mobile engineers who worked hand-in-hand with Moovit. The philosophy was simple: ship the MVP fast (2 months), get it into real users' hands, learn, and iterate. We built the first versions entirely in-house, then transferred the knowledge and managed Moovit's mobile team alongside our own developers for years.

There was no transit app playbook to follow. We invented the UX patterns from scratch for route search, live tracking, arrival alerts, and multi-modal trip planning. Today, most public transit apps in the world use the interaction models that we created for Moovit.

[ WHAT WE DELIVERED ]

Four Breakthroughs That Defined Urban Mobility

Each of these solved a problem that had no existing answer. Together, they made Moovit the first real transit app in the world.

[ 01 ]

MVP in 2 Months, Partnership for Years

We built the first versions of Moovit entirely in-house. We then transferred the knowledge, managed our combined mobile teams, and continued supporting them for years.
[ 02 ]

Real-Time Crowd Intelligence at Scale

We helped building the data pipeline that collects, processes, and displays live transit information from millions of users and hundreds of transit operators, updated in milliseconds.
[ 03 ]

Invented the Industry Standard

Route search, live tracking, arrival alerts, multi-modal trip planning. We invented UX patterns that became the absolute standard for the entire mobility industry.
[ 04 ]

Full GIS Architecture

Instead of relying on off-the-shelf tools that couldn't handle the load, we created a full GIS (Geographic Information System) structure from scratch to process millions of concurrent location endpoints efficiently.

Background

Building a product that needs to move fast?

POC in days. MVP to production in weeks.

[ PROCESS ]

From Idea to Global Product in 4 Phases

[ 01 ]

Discovery & Architecture — 1 Week

Embedded with Moovit's founders. Mapped the transit data landscape, user scenarios, and technical risks. Defined the minimum viable product and the fastest path to market. Output: architecture plan and sprint roadmap.

[ 02 ]

MVP Build — 8 Weeks

Daily builds, weekly releases, continuous user testing. Shipped route planning, real-time ETAs, crowd-sourced data, and a full GIS structure. Output: production app live in the App Store and Google Play.

[ 03 ]

Market Launch & Rapid Iteration — Ongoing

Observed real user behavior, identified friction, and shipped fixes fast. Added multi-modal support, transit operator integrations, and accessibility features based on actual usage data.

[ 04 ]

Scale Engineering — Post-Launch

Refactored the real-time pipeline for global scale. Expanded from Israeli cities to 3,500+ cities in 112 countries. Continuous performance optimization as the user base grew from thousands to hundreds of millions.

[ TECH ARCHITECTURE ]

Built Fast, Refactored for Scale

We didn't over-engineer on day one. We shipped fast, learned what worked, and continuously improved the architecture as Moovit grew from Israeli cities to 112 countries.

Speed Over Perfection

Focused on rapid market entry with a lean architecture that delivered real value fast. Early traction informed every technical decision that followed.

Continuous Architectural Evolution

Refactored iteratively as usage grew. Performance bottlenecks, data layers, and routing logic were upgraded without disrupting millions of active users.

Scalable by Design

Core systems were modular from day one, allowing new cities, operators, and countries to be added without rewriting the platform.

Growth-Driven Engineering

Every technical improvement was driven by real user behavior and expansion needs, enabling Moovit to scale from Israeli cities to 112 countries.

[ WHY GLOBALBIT ]

Why Moovit Chose Globalbit

Moovit needed a team that thinks like founders, moves at startup speed, and ships products that real people use every day.

[ 01 ]

We Solve Unsolved Problems

Creating a full GIS structure from scratch, processing real-time crowd data, inventing transit UX. We invent solutions because no existing answers exist. That's the engineering challenge we look for.
[ 02 ]

Startup Speed, Production Quality

Delivered the MVP in 2 months with rapid release cycles and zero bureaucracy. We move at startup speed, but we build architecture designed to last.
[ 03 ]

Mobile Apps for Millions of Users

Moovit chose Globalbit for proven experience building mobile applications that millions of people use daily. Native platform knowledge, performance optimization, consumer-grade UX.
[ 04 ]

We Build Lean. We Scale When It Pays Off.

Focused on delivering traction without burning budget on premature complexity. We shipped what mattered, validated in market, and scaled the architecture only when growth demanded it.
